Whole Wheat Guild Avo Toast Social

Saturday, November 7, 2026 | 2:00–4:30 PM
Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum | Vista, California

Join The Bread Underground and the Whole Wheat Guild for an afternoon celebrating two of Southern California's greatest agricultural treasures: locally grown wheat and avocados!

San Diego is famous for its avocados, but what about the bread underneath them?

The Whole Wheat Guild is working to rebuild Southern California's local grain economy by connecting farmers, millers, bakers, and the community. This special event brings everyone together for creative interpretations of avocado toast, freshly baked bread, and conversations about the future of locally grown wheat.

Featured Speakers

Don Guerra — Barrio Bread, Tucson, Arizona
James Beard Award-winning baker and pioneer of the local grain movement. Don will share how his community developed a thriving regional grain economy.

Rob Maden — Staff of Life Wheat & Whole Wheat Guild
Founder of the Whole Wheat Guild, Rob will discuss the progress being made to bring locally grown and freshly milled wheat back to San Diego.

Jay Watte — Imperial Valley Wheat Farmer
Jay will discuss the upcoming growing season and the expansion of heritage wheat production in Southern California.

The Bread Underground Will Be There!

We're excited to join other local bakers and chefs in creating unique avocado toast offerings featuring locally grown wheat. We'll be bringing plenty of our naturally fermented sourdough bread to share.

Guests can enjoy avocado toast tastings, explore the museum's wheat fields and milling operations, and learn how local grain moves from farm to flour to bread.
